Sketch out your proposed flash card designs on a piece of paper. This is especially important if you are creating graphic-based flash cards (e.g. flash cards focused on an image). Plan out the complete set of flash cards before you begin designing them online. In this way, you have a full understanding of what you wish to make and what it involves before sitting down at a computer.

Obtain any graphic image files that you need for your flash cards. Skip this step if you are creating text-based flash cards (like flash cards for memorizing terms or names). Graphic images may be obtained from a digital camera if you are a photographer, or from an online database. Various websites offer free images under the Creative Commons license. Examples include Wikimedia Commons and Flickr (links in the Resources section).
