Plastic is durable and non-breakable. It is an excellent choice for outside products like plant containers, lawn furniture and children's toys that are exposed to the elements. Although it holds up well in all weather conditions, it does tend to fade over time leaving a dull or mottled finish. You may think you have no choice but to replace the item. Fortunately, relatively new technology has made it possible to refinish plastic with paint specifically designed to adhere to plastic. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Visit you local hardware or craft store and view the selection of colors available for painting plastic. Look for Krylon Fusion paint. It is available in spray and costs around $6 a can.

    • 2

Sand the item with fine sandpaper. Work slowly and avoid leaving scratches. Wash with ammonia based cleaner to remove any dirt or residue. This will also assist in paint adhesion.

    • 3

Select a well-ventilated area with a temperature between 50 and 85 degrees for painting. You can do this outside, but be sure to protect the surrounding area for overspray. A calm, sunny day is best.

    • 4

Shake the can to mix the paint. Hold the can in an upright position 8 to 10 inches from the object.

    • 5

Apply a thin coat of paint by spraying in a sweeping motion from side to side.

    • 6

Allow to rest for 30 seconds and repeat with another thin coat. Applying several thin coats prevents dripping or running and improves the appearance of the final project.

    • 7

Allow to dry for 24 hours before using.
