Things You'll Need:
- Shimano equipment
- Travala rods
- Powerpro fishing line
- Stinger hooks
- Tie-off rings
- Flourocarbon leaders
- High speed or high power reels
- Butterfly jigs
-
Step 1
First, decide which Travala rod to use. You also need to decide which type of Shimano reel you would like to try -- then set it up on the rod with the Powerpro line and flourocarbon leaders. The choices of jigs are regular, long or flat.
-
Step 2
You can now attach either a split or solid tie-off ring. Tie the jig to this. On either side of the jig tie off a Stinger hook, which will double your chances of catching a fish.
-
Step 3
Make a cast ending with the tip of your rod pointing down and lift the tip up to the 10 o'clock position with the retrieve. Move the pole in a tight oval motion on the retrieve. You can make the jig so that it moves side to side, horizontally or vertically. With a little practice you can make them roll and pitch. All these movements -- combined with the very splashy coloring -- seem to entice fish like no other lure.
-
Step 4
You can practice casting and retrieving using different rods, reels, and jigs. Experiment so that you learn which combination works best for you. Since they are all part of the Shimano system they are all interchangeable.
