Birdhouses are ideal for providing birds a place to rest and eat. As the warmer weather fades to cooler days, birdhouses provide safety and shelter. The actual birdhouse can be made from any type of material--mainly wood or metal. Creating a pole that extends the birdhouse towards the sky and away from the ground keeps the birds away from cats, dogs and other animals. The birdhouse pole can be made from wood, metal or even pipe.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 4 x 4-inch board
  • Circular saw
  • Tape measure
  • Shovel
  • Bag of concrete
  • Wheelbarrow
  1. Step 1

Choose the bird for your birdhouse. Some birds require taller pole sizes than others. Ask an expert at your local pet store what the required pole height is for your chosen bird.

  2. Step 2

Purchase a 4 x 4-inch board from your local lumber yard.

  3. Step 3

Have it pre-cut to your desired length, or measure and cut it at home with a circular saw.

  4. Step 4

Dig a hole 1 foot deep in the place where you will install your birdhouse pole.

  5. Step 5

Place the pole into the hole. Fill the hole with mixed concrete and let it cure overnight.

Tips & Warnings
  • Sometimes a tree can be used to support a birdhouse, but be careful about hammering nails into live trees. Look into alternate ways of connecting the birdhouse to the tree, like using rope or another type of tie.
  • Do not paint the birdhouse pole. Bright colors attract predators.
