How to Make a Bottle Spinner

A pop bottle spinner is a wind-powered decoration similar to a windsock. When the wind blows through the spinner, it twirls around. If the spinner is painted with bright colors, it can make quite a cheery decoration as it whirls around in a brisk breeze.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the label from a 2-liter soda bottle and paint it with bright colors. Symmetrical designs such as vertical or horizontal lines look really good when it's spinning, as do spirals that wrap around the bottle.

    • 2

Wrap a tape measure around the 2-liter soda bottle. Use a pencil to make marks at even intervals. Once an inch is good, but you can use bigger or smaller intervals if you want.

    • 3

Cut off the bottom of the bottle using either a scissors or a craft knife. Make the cut at the ridge at the bottom of where the label usually is.

    • 4
The green lines represent the cuts.

Make a long cut at about a 20-degree angle at every mark. You should have several even diagonal strips of plastic all the way around. Spread the strips out slightly.

    • 5

Unscrew the cap. Then, screw it again with a little piece of string inside to make a small loop.

    • 6

Attach a ball-bearing swivel (see Resources) to the loop. Attach the other end to a long string. Tie the string onto a tree or porch to hang the spinner.
