Turning an old pair of blue jeans into a stylish flared skirt is an interesting project to try. If you possess basic sewing skills, this is a project that you can complete in a few hours. There are no materials necessary other than your blue jeans, a sewing machine and basic sewing notions.
This flared skirt uses the cut off leg pieces as panels that are sewn in to the front, back, and both sides. The result is a cute flared skirt that will breathe new life into your old blue jeans.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Determine the finished length for the skirt. If your skirt will be hemmed, add 1/2 inch and cut off the legs of the jeans at this point.

  2. Step 2

Turn the jeans inside out and cut along the inner seam line.

  3. Step 3

Rip out the outer side seams with the seam ripper. Stop ripping when you are approximately halfway to the pockets.

  4. Step 4

Lay out the jeans on a flat work surface and align the sides of the skirt with the two back halves together and the two front halves together.

  5. Step 5

Trim away the excess fabric along the line shown in the illustration. Do not cut up into the yoke of the jeans.

  6. Step 6

Rearrange the skirt lining up the back and the front. Continue the cut you made in Step 5 by ripping with the seam ripper up to the point that the yoke begins (this is approximately at the top of the pockets).

  7. Step 7

Press under the raw edges you ripped and cut along both edges, pressing the seam allowance under at the yoke. Set the skirt aside for now.

  8. Step 8

Cut the removed legs along the side seams.

  9. Step 9

Lay out the skirt with the back facing up on a work surface. Place one leg under the back of the skirt. Secure the pressed seam allowance of the skirt to the leg piece with pins. Keep the leg piece smooth and even.

  10. Step 10

Stitch the leg along the edges of the skirt. Try to make your stitching similar to the stitching that already exists on the jeans if possible. Reinforce your stitching at the top near the yoke.

  11. Step 11

Turn the jeans skirt inside out and cut off the excess fabric from the leg piece approximately 1/4 inch away from your sewing.

  12. Step 12

Place the skirt with the sides together again, as in Step 4. Cut the extra fabric by trimming along a line from 2 inches under the zipper down to the bottom.

  13. Step 13

Turn in and press the seam allowance again along the sides.

  14. Step 14

Place the skirt with the front facing up on a work surface.

  15. Step 15

Place the other leg piece under the front of the skirt in the same fashion as the back of the skirt and pin to secure. Stitch the leg along the edges of the skirt again. Try to make your stitching similar to the stitching that already exists on the jeans if possible. Reinforce your stitching at the top near the yoke.

  16. Step 16

Arrange the skirt on the work surface with the sides together. Position a leg piece under one side. The back side will have a pressed seam allowance and the other side will not have a pressed seam allowance.

  17. Step 17

Draw along the unpressed edge of the front side onto the leg piece with a fabric pen. This line will be your seam line. You can now trim 1/2 inch away from the seam line. Match the leg piece with the unpressed edge and sew along the seam line to the point that you stopped ripping. Make your stitching similar to the stitching that already exists on the jeans if possible. Cut off any excess fabric from the leg piece.

  18. Step 18

Repeat with the other edge of the same leg piece and sew in the same fashion. Turn the skirt inside out and cut away any excess fabric from the leg piece.

  19. Step 19

Repeat Step 16 through Step 18 with the other side of the jeans skirt.

  20. Step 20

Trim the edges of the skirt so they are even and hem if desired to finish the flared jeans skirt.
