How to Take Apart an XBox 360 Console
Like many consoles, the Xbox 360 system can be modified to use different operating systems or load different kinds of game discs. To modify the console's internal components, you will need to open the case and pull out the chassis with a tool specially made to fit the Xbox 360 case holes.

1
Unplug the power cable from the back of the Xbox 360 console as well as all output jacks that connect to your television set. Remove any controllers connected to the console. Press down on the hard drive at the top of the console and slide it off. Set the hard drive aside.

2
Flip the Xbox 360 console over so that the bottom side is facing up. Press down on the face plate release button and then pull the face plate completely off. Place the case opening tool inside the first hole on the bottom edge facing towards you (see Resources below). Push in to release the clips holding the bottom plastic piece in place and then lift up on the bottom piece slightly. Put the opening tool into the hole on the opposite side of the case and repeat. Continue this process of pushing in on the alternating side holes until you reach the final hole and the bottom piece slides off.

3
Turn the console right side up and repeat the process of removing the top piece by pushing the opening tool into the holes on each side. Lay the case on its side once the top piece is removed and slide the opening tool into the seam between the two halves of the case until they pop open.
-
4
Pick up the top half of the case and remove it from the bottom half. Use a screwdriver to pull off the six screws along the sides of the metal chassis.
-
5
Turn the Xbox 360 console onto its other side and pull off the top half of the case. Remove the screws and pull the chassis apart to reach the console's internal components.

Tips & Warnings
If you don't want to buy the Xbox 360 case opening tool, you can instead cut up a large piece of plastic, such as that found on a CD-R spindle, into the correct keyed shape instead.
Your warranty with Microsoft will be voided as soon as you open the Xbox 360 console.
