Instructions

  1. Bag With a Simple Handle

    • 1

Fold the scarf in half so that the outside is facing in. Make sure the two ends of the scarf meet so that both sides are of equal length.

    • 2

Pin the sides of the scarf together. You want to leave enough of the scarf on either end to make the handle strap for the bag, but you can decide how deep you want the bag to be and how long you want the handle strap to be. The longer the scarf is, the more options you'll have in creating the bag.

    • 3

Sew the sides of the scarf together following where you put the pins. Then turn the bag inside right. At this point you should have a pouch with two long ends.

    • 4

Take the two ends and line them up so that the ends of the scarf meet. Tie the two ends together in a small knot.

    • 5

Sew the two ends together just under where the knot is. This way if the knot ever comes undone your bag won't fall off your shoulder.

    Bag With a Braided Handle

    • 6

Sew a straight line across the top of each side of the bag where the strap will start.

    • 7

Cut each side of the strap into three equal strips of material.

    • 8

Braid the three pieces of material together. Make sure you keep the braid tight so it doesn't come loose as you use the bag.

    • 9

Knot the two ends of the braided straps together and sew them together just under the knot to secure them.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your sewing machine isn't out and easily available, it will probably be quicker to hand sew the bag, since there is so little sewing to be done.

  • The braided strap will use up more material. So keep in mind, if you want a long strap, you'll need a really long scarf.
