Puppies love to please their owners. That is why it is important to begin training them as soon as possible. You can always build on the tricks that the puppy has already learned. For example, your puppy needs to learn how to sit so that it can learn how to lie down, and then roll over.
Bring your puppy into a room where there will be no distractions. It is best if one individual teaches the puppy one on one. Turn off all televisions and radios.
2
Hold a treat slightly above the puppies nose and firmly say "Sit."
3
Gently put one hand on the puppy's bottom and guide it down to the floor. You will need to do this the first few times you say the word "sit" so that the puppy will know what you want it to do.
4
Tell the puppy to "sit" again while holding the treat above the puppy's nose. If the puppy does sit, immediately reward the puppy with the treat and a lot of praise and petting. If the puppy didn't sit, then you will need to guide him a few more times.
5
Practice this trick for 10 minutes each day until the puppy can do the trick consistently. Any longer than 10 minutes will just be torture for puppy, which won't have that long of an attention span.
Tips & Warnings
If the puppy jumps up for the treat, firmly say "No" and turn your back to the puppy. The puppy will not like that you are ignoring it and will stop jumping up for the treats.
Never punish a puppy for not doing a trick. Puppies do not learn from yelling and hitting.
