How to Increase Motivation of Employees

Both financial and non-financial rewards are key to increasing employee motivation at your business. Financial rewards such as raises and bonuses are key, as are non-financial incentives such as expressing gratitude to your employees. By trying to see eye-to-eye with your employees, you will strengthen both employee motivation and your retention rate.

Instructions

    • 1

Offer employee discounts if you can. If you run a salon business, for example, start a program whereby salon employees receive 40 percent off all beauty products.

    • 2

Have employee parties. At the very least, hold an end-of-the-year employee party that is filled with fun activities such as raffle auctions and gift exchanges. You may also want to hold a party twice or more per year in order to keep motivation high throughout the year.

    • 3

Have financial employee rewards. Give out promotions or raises that hinge on an employee's job performance. For instance, restaurant owners often hold contests whereby the server who obtains the most positive comment cards wins a $50 to $100 reward.

    • 4

Pay your employees their normal salary during employee meetings and seminars. They will be more willing to increase their occupational knowledge if you financially compensate them for attending these activities.

    • 5

Write a company-based newsletter. Encourage your employees to offer their commentary or other input on any work-related topic. Having a newsletter will promote a stronger sense of solidarity among employees.

Tips & Warnings

  • The simplest way to increase employee motivation is to simply thank your employees and tell them they do a great job. Always put on an approachable face and encourage employees to speak about their work-related problems with you.

  • Never micromanage your employees. Give them the freedom to make their mistakes rather than constantly checking in on their performance.
