How to Sterilize a Clarinet Mouthpiece

There is no single way to sterilize a mouthpiece. Performers and educators generally use an approach that involves soaking the mouthpiece in a solvent. These solvents can include rubbing alcohol, household vinegar, freshly squeezed lemon juice, hydrogen peroxide, mouthwash and commercial products like Mi-T-Mist Mouthpiece Cleanser, Betadine or Sterisol. The main concerns are keeping the cork dry and avoiding discoloration of especially prized mouthpieces. Of all methods, the easiest is to use a spray on the mouthpiece and allow it to dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • There's a difference between cleaning and sterilizing. This method only sterilizes any built-up crud; it does not remove it. Sterilizing should be done daily. Cleaning should be done at least once a week. Most musical instrument shops carry sterilizing solutions and cleaners.

  • Dedicated clarinet teachers can be very picky about how the instrument is cleaned.
