How to Plan a Trip to Maine

  1. Step 1

Visit the Acadia National Park, a favorite spot for hiking, biking, rock climbing or swimming in the ocean. You can also opt for a drive along the Park Loop Road for some amazing sights. Hike the 3.5 miles around Jordan Pond, or go for a relaxing bike ride on the lake. Cadillac Mountain is one of the park's most popular spots. The 1,532-ft.-high peak is the highest on the eastern seaboard, and people often go there in the predawn hours to watch the spectacular sunrises.

  2. Step 2

Try more adventurous activities. Kayaking tours, whale watching cruises, lobster-boat rides, canoe trips and sailboat charters are all very popular. You can also head to the Ferry Terminal and hop on board the "Cat" for an adventurous, high-speed ferry ride to Nova Scotia. Or take a scenic drive along the the cliffs on the west side of Mount Desert Island.

  3. Step 3

Head to the beach. At Sand Beach, located within Acadia Park, you will find a fun scene, replete with surfing and open stretches of sand. You can bask on the sand or plunge into the crashing waves. If you prefer calmer waters, spend some time at the park's Echo Lake. In the picturesque Northeast Harbor, catch the waterfront scene or head over to the Southwest Harbor for some top-notch seafood restaurants. Enjoy some luscious lobster.

  4. Step 4

Check out the town of Bar Harbor. Spend some time walking along downtown's shopping loop and have some fun browsing. On the Oceanside Shore Path, you'll see quaint, century-old summer cottages, along with gorgeous views of the harbor.

  5. Step 5

Discover a blend of treasures at the Abbe Museum, located downtown. Home to thousands of artifacts spanning over 10,000 years of Native American history, the museum hosts a variety of demonstrations and performances by artists and musicians every Friday through the month of August.
