How to Fix a Spinning Reel Spool

Spinning reels feature an open-face design rather than being enclosed as with a spin cast reel. The line is wound onto a spool that is mounted to the front of the reel behind a bail. It may become necessary to perform routine troubleshooting, which oftentimes involves a thorough cleaning. With a few common items, you can solve many frequently occurring problems with spinning reel spools.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any fishing line that is on the reel to properly inspect and clean the spool. Dispose of the line properly by cutting into smaller sections and placing in an old plastic container for recycling.

    • 2

Remove the spool from the reel. This will most commonly require unscrewing a retainer that allows the spool to slide forward for removal. Some models, such as some Mitchell reels, require the spool to be turned slightly and then slid forward.

    • 3

Clean the spool thoroughly with a wet soapy cloth. Remove any debris deposits from the line such as algae or pond scum. These accumulations will impact the performance of the line during casting. Wipe the spool dry with a clean, dry cloth.

    • 4

Inspect the spool for any pits, nicks or deep scratches. These will prevent the line from smoothly leaving the spool during casting and may also damage and weaken the line. Minor scratches can be buffed out with a Brillo-type pad.

    • 5

Inspect the spool for any dents, particularly along the thin walls of the spool. Dents may interfere with the rotation of the spool on the reel, which may in turn cause damage to the reel itself.

    • 6

Apply a small amount of reel lube such as Reel Butter to the inside axle of the spool, and reassemble.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you detect deep scratches or dents, it may be necessary to replace the spool. You can obtain replacement spools for a nominal price at many sporting goods stores and online dealers. If you are unable to correct the issues with the spool, take the reel and spool to a qualified repair center.

  • Continuing to use the spool while malfunctioning can cause significant damage to the reel.
