How to Make Silk Bridal Bouquets

You can save a lot of money on flowers for your wedding by making your own silk bridal bouquet. As a do-it-yourself project, silk flowers also have a distinct advantage over fresh in that you don't have to wait until the last minute to arrange the bouquet. Instructions

    • 1

Plan the color scheme and the shape of your bouquet, as well as the flower species you want to use. Your bridal bouquet could be anything from a casual bunch of multi-colored wildflowers to an elegant, tumbling bouquet of white roses. Browse through floral websites like Wedding Flowers Guide for ideas. (See Resources.) Buy the flowers and other materials to make your silk bridal bouquet.

Hold the flowers in your hand and make a preliminary arrangement. Generally, the largest and tallest flowers are in the center. Place smaller flowers around the outer edges and pull down on the stems to make some blossoms lower in the bouquet and create a rounded or diamond effect. Consider how the flowers will look to you when you are holding them and how the bouquet will appear from the front and sides for wedding photographs. Silk flower stems are coated wire, and can be bent to make blossoms face in different directions. Don't feel they have to just stand straight up.

    • 3

Add greenery to your bridal bouquet. Dark green foliage adds contrast to set off the color of the flowers and gives the bouquet a more natural look. Greenery can be interspersed throughout the bridal bouquet, placed in a fan shape behind a tumbling bouquet or arranged in a bowl shape under a rounded bouquet.

    • 4

When you are satisfied with the arrangement of the flowers, lay the flowers down and use a wire cutters to remove the extra leaves from the stems. This will reduce bulk in what will be the handle of the bouquet.

    • 5

Pick up the arrangement and begin wrapping in floral tape at the top of the bouquet. Make a few passes to keep flowers in place and then stop wrapping. Cut the bottom of the stems to the desired length and continue wrapping tightly in floral tape all the way to the bottom.

    • 6

Beginning at the bottom of the stems, wrap ribbon over the floral tape and make a bow at the top. Most brides choose to use ribbon in the same color as their dress.
