Getting your hair highligted at a salon can put a dent in your wallet. Luckily, using a highlighting cap will save you lots of precious money and will leave you with even, natural-looking highlights. You can find the cap/hook at your local beauty supply store (or large chains like Wal-Mart, Target, etc.).

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hair Dye a few shades lighter than your current color
  • A highlighting cap
  • A highlighting hook (usually comes with the cap)
  • An old towel
  1. Step 1

Lay an old towel around your shoulders and place the cap over your head. Tie it securely under your chin.

  2. Step 2

With your hook, pull your hair through each of the perferated holes on the cap. For fewer, more subtle highlights, only pull hair through the holes that have a circle around them. (It helps to have a friend pull your hair through)

  3. Step 3

Make sure that the hair is pulled all the way through each hole.

  4. Step 4

Prepare your hair dye and apply it to only the hair that has been pulled through the cap.

  5. Step 5

Wait for the allotted amount of time (usually anywhere from 15-45 minutes depending on your current hair color and highlight color).

  6. Step 6

After the time is up, pull the cap off your head and step into the shower to wash and conditioner your hair.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have a friend help you pull your hair through the cap.
  • You can find a highlighting cap/hook at places like Sally Beauty, drug stores, Wal-Mart, Target and other beauty supply stores.
  • Most highlighting caps come with a highlighting hook (either metal or plastic).
  • Make sure you choose a hairdye that is suitable for you. If you have dark hair, going with hair bleach will result in orange-hued lockes which are no good! Choose a highlight color that is a one to two shades lighter than your current hair color for a more natural look.
