Things You'll Need:
- 1 gallon container
- 3/4 cup salt
-
Step 1
Start with a clean 1 gallon container of water. Mark the container "Salt". Add 1/3 cup of salt to the container and shake it until it dissolves. Put the container into the freezer.
-
Step 2
Periodically, check the container. The salt will tend to regroup so you will need to shake the container while it is still slushy to redistribute the salt. Keep it in the freezer. When it is completely frozen, there will be a small area of the bottom that has not frozen. That's OK.
-
Step 3
When you are ready to load your ice chest, take the container with the salt and put it in the bottom. We use two. Cover the containers with a bag of ice. Put you articles on the top. Since it takes a colder temperature to freeze ice water, than it does to freeze ice, your ice will remain frozen.
-
Step 4
You ice will remain frozen longer and you may even be able to freeze the ice again when you return home. The containers with the salt may defrost so just follow the same procedures and freeze them again. They will always be ready the next time you need to protect food in an ice chest.
