Step 1
Choose the site for your garden shed based on accessibility and firm level ground. An area two feet all around the building is needed for the construction of the building and to keep brush, etc from trapping moisture against the wood.
-
Step 2
Build the 2x6" pressure treated frame 16" on center on concrete block corners. Level the deck and measure diagonally across the corners to square the deck in preparation for your plywood floor.
-
Step 3
Lay the plywood floor on the joists. Nail the plywood down and cut the four foot pieces to fit, staggering the end joints.
-
Step 4
Frame the walls with 2x4"'s also 16" on center and apply the siding while the walls are laying on the deck. Stand them after each one is built, put a diagonal brace on the side to hold it up. Once all four walls are built, nail the corners together.
-
Step 5
Using trusses instead of rafters and a ridge board is easier. The truss halves are joined at the top with plywood pieces called gussets. Build the trusses and nail them into the top plates directly over each stud. Use metal ties to secure the trusses to the top plates.
-
Step 6
Sheath the roof using 1/2" plywood or OSB. Apply rake boards, fascia and soffits, corner boards and drip edging on the roof. Apply the roof shingles according to the manufacturer's instructions.
-
Step 7
Now it's time to frame the doors. Using 2x4 lumber, frame the doors using the "H" pattern with longer pieces for the sides. Cut the top and bottom to the same dimension, and the center cross piece 3" shorter. Measure diagonally across the door frame both ways to ensure that it's square.
-
Step 8
Lay 2x4's over the frame and mark them from underneath for the diagonal braces. Nail them into place, then apply the pine boards to the other sides.
