Use a Pocket Cloth Diaper

Many people tend to be intimidated by cloth diapers. There has been a recent influx of new cloth diapers to the marketplace and they have left some consumers scratching their heads. There are many kinds of cloth diapers, but this article will explain in detail how to prepare, use and wash a pocket style cloth diaper.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pocket Diaper
  • Insert
  1. Step 1

Carefully read the packaging instructions that came with your new pocket diaper. If you bought more than one diaper, it's a good idea to save at least one of the labels for future reference. Most diapers will need to be washed at least once before use.

  2. Step 2

Identify the parts of the diaper. Most pocket diapers have Velcro tabs that attach to a Velcro strip on the front of the diaper. There with be an opening on the back of the diaper where the insert will be placed. Place the insert inside the pocket diaper.

  3. Step 3

Put the diaper on your baby. Using the Velcro tabs, attach the tabs to the front of the diaper so that the diaper fits snuggly. Check the leg openings and especially the back of the diaper to be sure that no inside material is "peeking" out. If it is, tuck it back inside the diaper.

  4. Step 4

When your baby is ready for a change, unfasten the Velcro tabs and attach them to the laundry tabs. This prevents the tabs from becoming stuck to other items in the wash. Remove the insert and deposit the diaper and the insert in a diaper pail. (Of course, if the diaper is soiled, it will need to be rinsed in the toilet first!)

  5. Step 5

When you are ready to wash your diapers, refer back to your packaging instructions to determine the proper method. Usually cloth diapers call for LESS than the standard amount of detergent. You will want to make sure that the detergent you use is dye and perfume free.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your diapers are stained after washing, try hanging them outside in the sun for a few hours. The sun acts as a natural bleaching agent and 9 times out of 10 will completely remove the stain.
  • For night-time and naps, try using a second insert or a doubler in your pocket diaper. This will prevent leaks during the time your baby is asleep.
