It’s a great idea to start a corporation for your business, as it gives you many benefits. Some of the many benefits include protection from lawsuits, tax breaks and tax benefits, more authority and business status than a sole proprietorship, and others. An LLC or limited liability corporation is the simplest kind to start and operate. It can even be started by a single person, or a couple.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    1. Go to http://sos.ky.gov/business/. It’s the Secretary of State website for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. They oversee all business corporations for the state or commonwealth. Click the FastTrack Business Registration logo. It will lead you to a separate area of the website where you can register electronically to start an LLC company.

  2. Step 2

    3. You will need to gather the following information: business type you want to start, the business name you’re using, contact information for the business representative, contact information for the registered agent, the business operating address (No PO Boxes), a current email address, and a credit or debit card. Go through the registration process. Answer all questions as thoroughly as you can. Your LLC company is dependent on this registration process.

  3. Step 3

    5. At the end, you will need to pay their registration fee. Usually, it’s around $100. If you get stuck or have questions, you can email them at sos.fasttrack@ky.gov. Don’t forget to register with the IRS to get a Fed ID number or FEIN. Also you will probably need to get a state tax ID number from the Kentucky Department of Revenue. There's probably a fee for this, too. You can expect to pay $50 or less.

Tips & Warnings
  • This is fairly easy to do, but don't skip any steps or you'll cause delays.
