How to Set Up a Secure Wireless Network
Setting up a wireless network will allow you to broadcast a signal from a router to an area around your home or business. You'll want to secure the network to keep others from accessing your personal information as well as to prevent viruses, spyware and malware.
Instructions
-
-
1
Test your Internet connection to ensure that it's working.
-
2
Unplug your modem to turn it off.
-
-
3
Connect your wireless router to your modem using an Ethernet cable.
-
4
Connect the modem to the Internet, WAN or WLAN port on the router. If your computer is plugged into your modem, unplug the connecting cable from your computer and plug it into the Internet, WAN or WLAN port on the router.
-
5
Plug in your modem and turn it on. Once it's connected to the Internet, plug in and turn on your router. The router will light up when it is successfully connected to the modem.
-
6
Connect your computer to an open port -- one that is not labeled Internet, WAN or WLAN -- on your router using an Ethernet cable. Turn the computer on if it's not on already.
-
7
Open your Web browser and enter the address for your router configuration page. This information should have come with your router. Enter the default username and password, which are also listed in the manufacturer's instructions.
-
8
Change the SSID to a name that you will recognize as your network name and that will distinguish your network from neighbors' networks.
-
9
Enable WPA or WPA2. These are security features that encrypt your information to prevent potential attackers from accessing your network. Establish a network security key or pass code.
-
10
Assign an administrator password and click "Save Settings," "Apply" or "OK."
