Set Up a Secure Wireless Network
Set Up a Secure Wireless Network

Setting up a wireless network will allow you to broadcast a signal from a router to an area around your home or business.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Basic Computer Skills
  • A Wireless Router
  • Internet Connection
  1. Step 1

You will need a wireless router and a means of connecting to the internet.
You will also need a device that is capable of receiving the wireless signal that the router will broadcast. Most laptops have a built-in wireless card that is able to receive the signal. There are printers and game systems that also have this technology.

  2. Step 2

There are several type of wireless routers that broadcast progressively stronger signals. For a home application you should be able to find something for under $50.

  3. Step 3

Once you have your router, install the software that came with the device. The router will have an admin panel that you will use to enter settings. Make sure that you set up a WEP key so your signal is secure. Do not leave the router default settings in place as this offers you no protection from passers by or your neighbors.

  4. Step 4

Plug in the router to cable model or dsl modem using a LAN cable (looks like a telephone cable only bigger).

Some internet providers will provide a wireless router/modem. If they do, then you don't need to buy a wireless router.

  5. Step 5

If you are having trouble with the connection, make sure you have entered the correct WEP key on all computers and devices. Downloading the latest drivers for your network drivers can also help you make your first connection.
