Buy a used Kindle and save some $$!
Buy a used Kindle and save some $$!

With their nifty electronic paper technology and user-friendly layout, Kindles are THE high-tech reader for the 21st Century! Unfortunately, like all rockin' toys, they're also fairly expensive. In this economy, everyone's looking to save a buck or two without sacrificing quality. Here are some good places to look for a used Kindle (or a Kindle 2).

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1
    How used is too used?
    How used is too used?

Amazon Kindles (and Kindle 2's) are currently retailing for around $359 new in the store. You can definitely do better! But before you start your search, decide what your comfort level is when purchasing used electronics online. Does your Kindle need to be brand spankin' new? How about used, but still in the box it came in? How do you feel about refurbished Kindles? Are you ok with buying a Kindle that someone previously owned and used regularly?

  2. Step 2

Start with the obvious at Amazon.com. Do a search for "used kindle" and you'll see the devices selling used and new for $225. Not bad - but since you're looking for the best deal, why not dig a little deeper?

  3. Step 3

Check out Craigslist.org. You can do a search for "kindle" or "amazon kindle" in your local area, or expand your search nationwide. A search for "kindle" in my area turned up six listings at various prices.

  4. Step 4

Take a look at ebid.ie. This eBay-affiliated website is an online auction house; a quick search for "used kindle" turned up some seriously cheap electronics...including a Kindle 2 for $162! Just make sure you're looking at Kindle listings in the US, otherwise you may end up paying a small fortune in shipping fees!

Tips & Warnings
  • No matter who you buy a used Kindle from, make SURE you completely understand the return policy. A Kindle for $190 is a great deal - until you find out it's broken and you can't return it or get a refund.
  • Always ask questions before you purchase electronics online! Never purchase before your questions have been satisfactorily answered.
  • Remember, if it sounds too good to be true - it probably is.

on 3/27/2009 With something as expensive as the Kindle, I would purchase new. Amazon has a great return policy and customer service. That is something you don't really get from auction houses like ebay. http://www.bookbender.com
