Ever hear someone talk about good fats and bad fats? Ever wonder what the good fats are, and what is considered bad fats?
We all had to learn, so here is a little information.

    GOOD FATS, 'Monounsaturated': (olive oil, canola oil, peanut oil, almonds, avocados)

    'Polyunsaturated': (vegetable oils, corn oil, soybean, safflower, cottonseed) and fish.

    BAD FATS, 'Saturated' (whole milk, red meat, butter, cheese, coconut oil)
    'Trans' (Partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, most margarine, vegetable shortening)

    Polyunsaturated fats, are important and necessary, the body does not produce them so we must obtain them through our diets. Monounsaturated fats, are found in high concentrations in olive and canola oils. Mono unsaturated fats benefits in preventing heart disease and reducing cholesterol. Monounsaturated fats are healthy types of fats and should be included in our diets.

    Saturated fats are bad fats, because they have been shown to increase levels of bad fats (LDL) and decrease levels of good fats (HDL), and because of this an increased risk of heart disease. Saturated fats of any source should be consumed sparingly.

    Adding unsaturated fats, and reducing saturated fats, is important to developing a healthier way of eating. Unsaturated fats assist your body in reducing inflammation, and creating more flexible cell membranes. This is important because it helps to prevent heart disease. It is impossible to cut out every single amount of saturated fat, but you can limit your intake of saturated fats.

    Making changes to your diet may be daunting at first, but it is not difficult to incorporate new foods into our daily eating pattern. Sometimes, just say "no". Just because it is offered to you or because it is laid out in the break room at work, does not mean that you have eat it. Work on your will power, and just walk away. If you like fish and only have it occasionally, plan on adding it one or two times a week if possible.
