Spring is the time when gift giving can be inspired by the outdoors. If you have a gardener in your family, it's easy to create a gift basket they'll love and enjoy all season long.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A pretty basket, or even better -- a pot, planter, or pail
  • Acrylic paint and spray sealer(optional)
  • Items to fill the container you've chosen (see article for ideas)
  1. Step 1

Pick a nice container. If you choose a clay pot, you can paint or stencil a nice design or picture on it. Use your imagination to paint flowers, borders, or if you don't feel that artistic, try decoupaging a picture on the pot. If you do paint on the container, spray over it an acrylic sealer. Do this outdoors if possible, as the fumes are strong.

If you don't want to use a pot, consider a nice garden pail, or window box, or other type of container that a gardener would consider useful.

  2. Step 2

Decide if the container is going to have a theme, such as an herb garden, or flower garden, or window box garden, or hanging garden. Maybe it's only going to contain items for plants the person already has indoors; things such as fertilizer sticks, spray bottle for misting, potting soil, and so on.

Now, shop for those gardening items and fill the container! Here are a few ideas:
    *potting soil
    *trowel
    *garden gloves
    *foam knee pad
    *seed packets
    *bulbs
    *fertilizer
    *small plants or sets
    *greenhouse gift certificate
    *growing light
    *garden stakes or markers
    *twine
    *water bottle

  3. Step 3

Arrange your items in the container as decorously as possible using gift wrap or crepe paper or, you could buy a nice garden themed towel to line the container and use as wrapping. If you have lots of old garden catalogs lying around, you could even rip out colorful pages to and put them to use.

Then add a nice ribbon and a card and give your lovely garden away!

Tips & Warnings
  • Great ideas and lots of options abound in hardware/home building stores!
  • Think outside the "basket" for your container ideas. For instance, you might take a large pail and add to it a tree pruner, a bag of mulch, an apple picker.
  • Expand on the themes: a hummingbird garden, a butterfly garden, a birdwatchers garden, a salad garden, a corn-lovers garden, a popcorn garden!
