How to Make Your Own Bra

How to Make Your Own Bra thumbnail
make your own bra with just 1 yard of fabric, ribbon and elastic

Have you noticed women have to pay a arm and a leg for just a bra? They are all white, little lace and made the same way. Expensive too, not every woman has the same size chest or same width around her body. Manufacterers usually size bras to one individuals specifications. My grandmother used to make her own things and her bras were built to last. She didn't buy expensive patterns, expensive material or anything of that nature, she used a simple method. She fashioned them herself the way she was formed.
I have just taken up sewing because of empty pockets, empty pockets are just something that you don't like to have, but you can save a little money just by making them yourself. You will need simple materials to get things started. Those materials cost less than spending money you don't have for something that's not going to last a month. My bras never do because I am heavy chested and the elastic wears out of them so quickly.
I had been thinking and mulling over for quite sometime what to do. I found a method that looks a little bit like a bikini top, but you have an actual cup that holds you up. Let me show you how I make my "Special Bra". Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure yourself and write down your measurements. This will help with your bra construction. Find some newspaper, make a pattern. Cut two perfect equalateral triangles and two isosceles triangles the width of your body.

    • 2

Take your pattern down with good straight pins. Beaded straight pins are easier for me to use. Cut out two perfect equilateral and isosceles triangles from your newspaper patterns.

    • 3

hem each seam really well, put the equilateral triangles together and isosceles together at the center. Take some ribbon the width of your shoulders and sew at the top of each equilateral piece to the center of the isosceles triangle center. sew the back and front together. Also take elastic and sew around the bottom of your creation.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take your time sewing this, it only takes a few minutes, no more than twenty.

  • Elastic is more difficult to sew than anything else on this project, stretch your elastic with fabric when sewing it to the bra itself.

  • If you don't measure correctly, you will have to make another one. Measure, measure measure!
