How to Convert Decimals to Fractions

Learn how to easily convert decimals to fractions by following these simple steps.

Instructions

    • 1

The first step in converting a decimal to a fraction is to write the decimal number divided by one.

      Ex. .75/1

    • 2

Now, for every number after the decimal point in your number, multiply both the top number (numerator) and the bottom number (denominator) by 10. So, if there are two numbers after the decimal point, you would multiply both numbers by 100. If there were three numbers after the decimal point, you would multiply by 1000, and so on.

Ex. .75/1 X 100 (since there are two numbers after the decimal point)

After multiplying both the top and the bottom number by 100, you now have: 75/100

    • 3

Now that you have converted the decimal to a fraction, you can simplify the fraction by determining the highest number that will go into both the numerator and the denominator. In this example, both numbers are divisible by 25, so we can simply the fraction by dividing both numbers by 25.

      Example:

      (75/100) / 25 = 3/4

    • 4

An additional example of converting a decimal to a fraction is as follows.

      Convert .60 into a fraction.

We will write this as .60/1

Since there are two numbers following the decimal point, we will multiply both numbers by 100.

      .60/1 X 100 = 60/100

We can simply 60/100 by dividing both the top and bottom numbers by 20 since 20 is the highest number that both are divisible by.

      (60/100) / 20 = 3/5

The new simplified fraction is 3/5.
