Step 1
Check the tag to determine what size and weight the life jacket was made for. But do not stop there. You will need to try it on to be sure that it will fit you. People come in all shapes and sizes and the one size fits all category does not always work.
-
Step 2
After trying it on, is it comfortable? If there are straps that are placed in sensitive areas or chaff and rub your skin do not get that life jacket. Life jackets are only going to be effective if you wear them, so choose one that is comfortable to wear.
-
Step 3
Evaluate the color of the life jacket. A fashionable color or pattern sure may look good, but never buy a life jacket to make a fashion statement. You will need one that is a bright color, preferably with reflective tape. This will make the life jacket visible in the water to other boaters and rescue crews.

Step 4
Lastly, check the tag to make sure that the jacket is made for the type of water activity you are doing. Some jackets are made for deep sea fishing, while others are intended for light boating. Life jackets are ranked in different categories and impact classes that need to be used in that particular boating scenario.
