Find Mac Address

MAC stands for media access control. It is an identifier that is assigned to nearly all equipment that communicates via a network. It is sometimes necessary to find your MAC ID when you are calling your ISP and troubleshooting an Internet connectivity problem. Some broadband modems will have the MAC address imprinted on the side of the modem. You can also find the MAC using terminal commands.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Start menu and enter "CMD" without the quotes in the search box. Press "Enter."

    • 2

Type "IPconfig /all" in the command prompt box without the quotes and press "Enter."

If you get an error stating you do not have admin rights go to the Start menu and select All Programs. Right-click "Command Prompt" and select Run as Administrator.

Look under the Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection heading. The combination of letters and numbers next to the words "Physical Address" is your MAC ID.

Tips & Warnings

  • MAC IDs are always 12 alphanumeric characters.

  • Never give your IP address or MAC address, or any of the information that comes up in the IPconfig /all screen, to anyone you do not know.
