Spring, the time of year that traditionally symbolizes birth, love, new beginnings, and renewal. What a perfect time to capture the positive energy (chi) in your home by using the first principal of feng shui. Clear away the clutter and organize. Any style of home décor will benefit from your use of this feng shui guideline. If you never take feng shui any further than this first basic step, you will notice a dramatic change in your home environment.
So, let's get started!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sense of Determination
  • Trash Bags
  • Boxes
  • Cleaning Supplies
  1. Step 1

The first step is to decide where to start. Think of only one room at a time, starting in your favorite room. If you love to cook and family meal time is a special part of your routine, start there. If you and your family enjoy gathering in the living room, great! Begin with that room. If you have a room that is your own special retreat….. you get the point.
Once you have chosen a place to begin, forget the rest of the house. Don't allow yourself to become overwhelmed at the thought of organizing your whole house. Remember your immediate goal is just one room.

  2. Step 2

Okay, now you get your trash bag, storage box, and charity box. Begin in one corner of whatever room you chose. Take a good look at each and every item in your room. You have three choices with each one. 1) You use the item regularly and/or it is an important family treasure (something that means a lot to you). These are the items you will keep. 2) You either don't use this, or it doesn't have any special significance to your family, but it's still usable. These items go into the charity box. 3) This item is the one you wonder why you didn't get rid of a long time ago. You guessed--trash bag.
As you go through this sorting process, be ruthless. Don't keep it unless you really need it. If you run across something that you don't need and you still can't bear to part with it, consider putting it in some sort of storage. The whole point is to remove all of the clutter from your environment. That allows the positive energy that is available naturally, to flow freely.

  3. Step 3

The next step is to deliver the charity box to the organization of your choice. Remember to ask for a receipt, this is a charitable, tax deductible (as long as it's to a non-profit organization) donation. It's not deductible if you give it to the family down the street, but if they need the items, by all means give them to the ones you consider need them most.

  4. Step 4

Dispose of the items you put in the trash. That way no one will be tempted to take anything out and begin the clutter cycle all over again.

  5. Step 5

Okay, now the worst part is over. You are left with the items that are useful and/or have a special significance to you and your family. Clean the room as you rearrange everything. Make sure the room feels comfortable. Arrange the furniture so people feel welcome when they enter. Place the furniture so that people can look at each other when they are talking. Put your special treasures in a prominent place so everyone can see them. For instance, your family room may have one wall devoted to photos of family members at special times in their lives (birthdays, graduation, special events, etc…). If it's the kitchen, you may have a few pots of herbs in the window. Above all, make sure there is no more clutter.

  6. Step 6

Now, your favorite room is finished. Once the clutter is gone and the room clean, the positive energy that exists naturally will be allowed to flow freely. You may be surprised at how calm you feel, yet you will also have a source of rejuvenation at the same time. Sit back, relax, and enjoy.

  7. Step 7

Soon, you will feel almost compelled to tackle the next room. When you do, begin again with step one and continue through until you are here.
Before you know it, your whole house will be finished.
    The effects will amaze you!

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember--one room at a time.
  • Don't become overwhelmed.
  • Enjoy!

on 5/10/2009 Great article. It reminds me of something I read one time. I don't remember the author or name of the article, but the writer said she was in a crisis, a big crisis, and so she called her mother for advice. Her mother's advice was to get the house organized and then she would be able to deal with the crisis more effectively. Apparently the daughter took the advice and it worked for her. That makes a lot of sense to me. A cluttered environment equals a cluttered mind. I'm giving you 5*s and a recommend.
