Reading can be such a pleasurable pastime. Reading can take you to faraway lands, time long again or out among the stars. Helping your child to enjoy books could be one of the greatest gifts that you give them. Not every child naturally enjoys to read. Here are some tips that may help.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Books!
  1. Step 1

Read to your child, even at a really early age. It truly is never too young to start. Even an infant will love the attention, love the bright pictures and love hearing your voice. Continue to read to your child even when the child is old enough to read for him/herself.

  2. Step 2

If you can, get your child interested in books really early in life. Provide your child with bright, colorful board books as soon as they are old enough to hold them. The bright pictures will intrigue him/her. Continue to provide age appropriate books for your child as he/she grows up.

  3. Step 3

Go to the library often. Allow your child to pick out age appropriate books that they may enjoy. Ask the children’s librarian for recommendations. That is their job and they know what the latest good books are. Help your child find books on subjects that they love.

  4. Step 4

Read in front of your child. Let your child see you enjoying a book. Many parents feel they just don’t have enough time or they feel guilty because they feel they should be spending that time with their kids, but kids model the adults that they are around and if they never see you pick up a book, they may not either. That does not mean spend every waking moment with a book, but do let them see you reading once in awhile.

  5. Step 5

Watch a movie, then read the book. Ok, this one is controversial. I know a lot of people who will not watch a movie until after they have read the book, but if you have a child that is reluctant to read, then watching the movie first, may peak their interest enough to get them to want to learn more.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some children, no matter what you do, will not be big readers. I had a friend that hated to read and she still did very well in school (graduated 3rd in our class of over 400). All you can do is try to get their interest up and the rest is up to them.
