Start the Process for Home Schooling

Do you feel the need to home school your child? No matter what the reason is that ultimately compels a parent to home school, there are simple steps to start the process.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Printer
  • Paper
  • Desire to teach your child basic education
  1. Step 1

The first step is to contact the local Superintendent for your child's school district by sending them a letter of intent to home school. Also include a request for information on what they require from you for this process.(it varies between school districts and states)

  2. Step 2

Most likely you will receive a packet with information for the steps involved. In these there will most likely be a request for a scope and sequence. In simple terms this is an outline of the material you will teach your child, and the manner in how you will accomplish it. (subjects and schedules)Comply with all requirements. Send all materials requested back.

  3. Step 3

Contact your child's teacher and principal about your decision. Home schooling is a big commitment and no doubt you will meet with opposition at some point. Be determined to stick to it. Ask the teacher if they would continue to be involved in your child's education by evaluating your son/daughter at the end of each school year. You will probably be required to have this done yearly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure your schedule allows you to give this the time needed.
  • Don't take the decision lightly, it is a monumental task, but is very rewarding.
