Things You'll Need:
- Skills that you would like to volunteer
- Interest in local culture
-
Step 1
First step involves a lot of research. This is the only way to know that the program you'll eventually enroll in, is right for you. Traveling in most cases is associated with fun, taking a brake from our mondaine lives, but you are about to go to a foreign country and you will be committed to offering your expertise to the local community.
-
Step 2
There you are not a tourist, but as a person that is willing to offer skills such as teaching children or assist teachers. Depending on the organization and the country, you could be caring for people with disabilities, working toward women's empowerment, caring for the elderly etc. This are all noble causes that need to be taken seriously.
-
Step 3
Once you understand your roll as a volunteer, there is the financial part that you'll have to figure out. The cost for this trip will vary depending on factors such as country and time of the year. One way to look at this, is to compare your living expenses at home and your daily activities, to the potential life changing experience you're about to commit to.
-
Step 4
After all of this you can make an informed decision. Once you know that you will not be living in a hotel, (but most likely, you will have to share modest accommodations) and you still want to do it, then you are ready. Pick the organization you think is best for you, they will guide you through the rest of the process.

on 8/28/2009 Thanks for the info - perhaps a fund raiser could help with the volunteer's expenses. I is amazing how charitable people are.
