1
Dig a trench approximately 4 inches deep with a shovel. The trench needs to be as wide as the edging material, plus an additional 2 to 3 inches to provide workspace. Remove any grass or landscape along the pathway where you want the edging, so transplant the landscape, if possible.
-
2
Spread a 1/4-inch bed of sand across the length of the trench to provide a foundation for the stone or brick. For strip edging, place the strips into the soil against the walkway or sidewalk and tap into the soil with a rubber mallet. Position the provided stakes behind the edging and tap into the soil to secure the strips in place.

3
Spread a 3/4-inch bed of crushed gravel over the sand to encourage drainage underneath the brick or stone. Press the materials down with a tamper to create an even work surface.
-
4
Lay the stone or brick along the trench in the desired pattern. Place the stones and bricks as tightly together as possible, and use a stone cutter to make any necessary cuts around the edges of the border.
-
5
Spread a layer of sand over the edging to fill the gaps between each stone and then brush off any excess with a broom. Refill the backside of the trench with soil and add landscape around the border, if desired.
