Trying to get rid of mold? An inspection by a professional trained in mold remediation is recommended for severe mold problems. But there are few mold cleanup steps you can do on your own to help get rid of mold.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Wear a safety mask that filters mold spores along with gloves and safety glasses whenever removing mold.

  2. Step 2

Wipe all hard surfaces--like glass, metal, plastic toys-- with a bleach solution of one cup bleach to one gallon water. Allow them to dry completely. Mold loves moisture and will regrow on damp surfaces. Use fans in large areas to dry surfaces quickly.

  3. Step 3

Identify porous-type materials that are contaminated with mold. Items like carpet or drywall will unfortunately have to be removed and thrown away. You can not get rid of mold on these surfaces with surface cleaners alone.

  4. Step 4

Wash any smaller items like clothing, curtains, pillows and other cloth items in a hot water cycle. Inspect after cleaning for remaining mold. Toss any items that can't be washed thoroughly.

  5. Step 5

Check humidity levels throughout your home with a digital humidity monitor. Keep levels at 40 to 60 percent. You may need to setup a dehumidifier in very humid areas to keep down the levels of household mold.

  6. Step 6

Repair any moisture leaks quickly. Areas around water pipes and windows are especially vulnerable. The only way to get rid of mold permanently after a mold cleanup is to keep areas dry.
