You will literally learn how to immediately stop your dog from chewing your shoes or any other object.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A length of rope from 12 to 18 inches long. A scissors and a chewed shoe.
  1. Step 1

When you come home and find your shoes chewed up or if you have already had it happen in the past, you want to get a length of rope of appropriate length depending on the size of your dog. It must be long enough to go around your dog’s ears. Usually between 12" to 18" long.

  2. Step 2

Now you are going to cut the rope into two equal parts.

  3. Step 3

Now attach each piece of the rope to your shoe. Even if you have to put holes in the shoe, go ahead and do it. After all, the shoe is already destroyed and this technique is going to put an immediate end to the shoe chewing.

  4. Step 4

Now, you have the ropes attached to the shoe. Your dog will naturally be a bit stand offish wondering what you are doing. Go ahead and talk to him or her in a high pitched voice coaxing him to come over. Let her smell the shoe and be kind to her.

  5. Step 5

Now open her mouth and place the shoe inside and tie the ends of the rope behind her ears. Make sure the shoe is tightly installed in his mouth and tied tightly behind his head. Observe him as he tries desperately to get the shoe out of his mouth. Make sure he is not in any physical distress. Make sure that he is unable to dislodge it. If he is able to dislodge it, you will need to re-adjust it.

I have done this with all of my dogs. I have had two Rottweiler’s and two Rhodesian Ridgebacks. These are willful dogs and I was able to do this easily. Don't worry, this will not cause any type of aggressive behavior in the future.

  6. Step 6

Once you are comfortable that she cannot dislodge the shoe, go ahead and ignore her. Let her go crazy trying to get the shoe out of her mouth. Eventually she will give up and just lay there looking at you or she will go to sleep.

  7. Step 7

Allow for about 3 or 4 hours for your puppy to fall asleep. When she wakes up, you can remove the shoe from her mouth and give her, her own personal chew toy and some loving.

  8. Step 8

If by chance your dog is really, really hard headed and does it again, just do the same process again. I guarantee this will work. It has worked for me for 4 very strong willed dogs. It will work for you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be gentle and compassionate with your puppy. This is a training exercise and although necessary, it alone will cause enough emotional discomfort by itself without you adding to it by yelling and being rough with her.
  • Again be gentle and understand that dogs are emotionally sensitive. Particularly to the fluctuations in your voice. High Pitched means nice. Low pitch means trouble.
