How to Grow Lavender for Homemade Potpourri

Lavender plants are slender spikes of purple, blue, or pink tone flowers. Lavender is highly aromatic with a sweet, clean fragrance, and great for use in potpourri.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 10 to 20 drops essential oil.

  • other dried fragrance leaves.

  1. Step 1

    Start seeds indoors eight to ten weeks before the last spring frost date, then transplant lavender seedlings to your garden after that date. Lavender grows best in full sun light, but plants will tolerate partial shade. Space plants 1 to 3 feet apart when planting.

    Lavender plants should be planted in soil that drains moderately and is fertile. Do not over water plants. Allow the top inch of soil to dry between watering. Lavender plants that are in consistently moist soil are prone to root rot.

    Lavender stems should be harvested when the flowers are nearly open. Cut flowers several inches below the bloom.

    Lavender plants can be dried by laying flat or hanging plants from the stem upside down in a hot location

    For long a blend of scents in your potpourri, various fragrances will be nice. Along with Lavender you could add dried peppermint leaves, dried rosemary, dried mint, allspice potpourri, sweet pea potpourri, or whatever suits you. Have fun experimenting with combinations.

    Include with your dried lavender, three to nine different ingredients. Let everything equal to about 2 cups of dried ingredients. Add 4 to 8 tablespoons of a fixative material, such as orrisroot and oakmoss this will help your fragrance stay fresh and strong for a long time.

    Next add 10 to 20 drops of Lavender oil or another essential oil. You can put your potpourri in little sachets or potpourri holder.
