How to Make an Inbound Pass Against a Denial Press
When facing a full-court denial defense, it can be very challenging to make the initial inbound pass. It can be especially difficult when the opposing team chooses not to defend the inbound passer and uses that player to cover your team 5 on 4. This article focuses on a strategy to get the ball in play when the inbound passer is not being guarded and that passer can run the baseline (passer cannot run the baseline from a dead ball situation).
Things You'll Need
- Basketball game when opposing team is using a full-court denial press
- Live ball when the inbound passer can run the baseline
Instructions
-
-
1
The player with the ball should be out of bounds and outside the lane lines.
-
2
The other players should form a straight line across the free throw line. The guards should be on the elbows and the forwards should be about 15 feet outside of the guards.
-
-
3
The guard on the ball side sets a screen for the other guard. The goal is to set a good screen to open up a guard for the inbound pass on the ball side. The guard that sets the screen then rolls toward the baseline across the lane for a pass.
-
4
The two forwards take a couple of steps toward the baseline. If this pass is open, the inbounder should make the pass. If it is not open, the forwards should clear out to half-court.
-
5
If none of the four players are open, the guard that set the screen and rolled should go out of bounds under the basket.
-
6
The inbounder throws a pass to that guard that went out of bounds, as it is legal to make that pass when it is not a dead ball situation.
-
7
The original inbounder then steps onto the court to receive a return pass. Because nobody was guarding the original inbounder, this pass will be open.
-
8
Continue with the team press break process.

Tips & Warnings
The guard must be sure to get out of bounds within 3 seconds to allow for a catch and return pass to occur within 5 seconds--failure to get the ball in bounds within 5 seconds results in a turnover.
The original inbounder must be sure to wait until the guard is completely out of bounds before making the pass.
After doing this out of bounds pass a couple times, the pressing defense will probably assign a player to guard the inbound passer--this will allow for a 4 on 4 situation where the offense will have an easier time to get the inbound pass.
