How to Improve Rebounding in Basketball
Rebounding is arguably the most important aspect of a successful basketball team. Good rebounding teams have a combination of good techniques along with a strong desire for the ball. In this article I will focus on a rebounding drill that not only improves rebounding abilities--but also builds skills in put backs and outlet passes.
Things You'll Need
- At least 4 players
- Basketball
- Basketball hoop
- Coach or extra player for shooting
Instructions
-
-
1
Split the players into groups of two. Each group of two will be a team.
-
2
Bring two teams into the lane. Assign one team to be the offense and the other to be the defense.
-
-
3
A coach or extra player has a ball and dribbles around the perimeter. While doing this, the offense is moving around the lane and the defense is guarding them, while also keeping an eye on the person with the ball.
-
4
The player with the ball takes a shot.
-
5
The two defenders shout "shot, box" and proceed to box out the offensive players using the proper technique.
-
6
The offense and the defense hustle after the rebound.
-
7
If one of the defensive players secures the rebound, he/she makes an outlet pass to the shooter.
-
8
If one of the offensive players secures the rebound, he/she attempts to score against the defense. This can be done by shooting or passing to his/her teammate for a shot.
-
9
The defense stays on defense until they secure the rebound on the first shot. If they fail to secure the rebound three times in a row, they should do five push-ups. The five push-ups should be done with each failure beyond the first three, which will get them to focus on boxing out and securing rebounds.
-
10
When the defense does secure the rebound, the teams rotate (offense to defense and defense to offense). If there are more than two teams at a basket, the rotation goes defense to offense to out.

Tips & Warnings
Rebounding is a lot about desire.
Set a time limit for this drill (5 minutes of intense rebounding should be sufficient).
