Fill In A Deep Hardwood Scratch in Woodflooring

To fill in a deep hardwood scratch in wood flooring or piece of furniture will require some tools and a bit of dexterity with a credit card or spatula.

There are several ways to cover the scratch but if it is deep it will need extra treatment to fill it in.

Specifically colored wax crayons that match most shades of woodflooring can be found at hardware stores. Or you might check out an old box of crayons to find a color match with the woodflooring. Here are some methods of treatment:

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • crayons
  • spatula
  • specialty colored wax from a hardware store
  • small microwave dish
  • credit card or other plastic with a straight edge
  1. Step 1

If you need to fill in a deep hardwood scratch in woodflooring, try melting the crayon in the microwave oven in the small dish. Take the paper off the crayon, break it into pieces and place it in the dish and melt it in your microwave.

  2. Step 2

Use the microwave in 10 second increments until the crayon melts. Be very careful and handle it with a potholder as the dish may be hot. (See step 5 if you do not wish to melt the crayon in the microwave.)

  3. Step 3

You can pour the melted wax into the deep hardwood scratch in the woodflooring. Before it sets up and hardens, take the credit card edge, or a half cut off plastic top making a straight edge, and gently glide it over the area taking off the extra wax.

  4. Step 4

Try to keep the crayon wax level as it lays in the deep hardwood scratch in the woodflooring, and even with the rest of the surface, as you scrape the extra wax off.

  5. Step 5

If you prefer not to use the microwave to melt the crayon, you can grate it into tiny pieces with a knife or a small cheese grater. You can use a muffin tin to melt it. Place a small formed bowl of aluminum foil in the muffin tin and put the grated crayon in it.

  6. Step 6

You should preheat the oven to about 300 degrees. Place the muffin tin in the oven. It will take 2-4 minutes to melt the crayon. Pour the crayon into the scratch from the aluminum foil bowl. Continue with step 3 and 4.

  7. Step 7

When the area cools and completely hardens, use a soft cloth to buff the area. You might consider a light coat of wax over the entire area of woodflooring or piece of furniture.

Tips & Warnings
  • Test the crayon color beforehand by placing a few drops into the deep hardwood scratch in the woodflooring to check the color match.
  • If you prefer not to work with melted crayon, press the little pieces of crayon into the scratch in the woodflooring. Use a blowdryer set on low to help harden it into the scratch, then level it. Buff to blend and shine.
  • Be careful and handle the hot dish with the melted wax with a potholder.
  • When you are gliding the plastic straight edge over the wax, try not to scrape the surface of the woodflooring.
