Over 60 years ago Micheline Bernardini caused quite a scandal when she wore the first bikini in a public forum in Paris. Of course, you see the bikini everywhere these days, and some might say it's so common it's a little overexposed. :) This article will explain the different styles of bikinis available so you can choose a bikini that's right for you.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1
    Yellow polka dot bikini.
    Yellow polka dot bikini.

THE NEW CLASSIC BIKINI - Choose a bikini like this itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polka dot bikini by Victoria's Secret. It's a new classic updated version. With the bandeau top and the bottoms that cover more flesh, you should select this style bikini if you like to keep some things left to the imagination.

  2. Step 2
    String bikini.
    String bikini.

STRING BIKINI - Choose this designer string bikini brand new this year by Christian Audigier. Note the string bikini has the adjustable string top and the fuller bottom and front sections are tied together with a string.

If you do prefer a designer name when you choose a bikini, you can find this beautiful swim wear available on Ebay for $189. However, you can also do a search on Ebay to find more affordable string bikinis in all colors and prints.

  3. Step 3
    Monokini.
    Monokini.

MONOKINI - Choose a monokini bikini like this cute number by Victoria's Secret if you like the idea of baring your flesh, but prefer a bikini that feels a little more secure. Note that a monokini is basically a one-piece suit that appears to be two separate pieces from the back.

  4. Step 4
    Brazilian style bikini.
    Brazilian style bikini.

BRAZILIAN STYLE STRING BIKINI - Look carefully at the brazilian style string bikini and you'll notice the main difference between this suit and a regular string bikini is in the cut of the bottoms. Basically the front and back of the bottom are two "large" V-shaped pieces. If you choose a bikini like this, you should get a Brazilian bikini wax to accompany it.

  5. Step 5
    Micro bikini.
    Micro bikini.

MICRO BIKINI - If you've got a really nice posterior and a lot of confidence, feel free to choose a micro bikini. Note the adjustable top and the G string bottom that leave nobody guessing. Do a LOT of lunges before you wear this style bikini and wear it while you're young! :)

  6. Step 6
    Slingshot bikini.
    Slingshot bikini.

SLINGSHOT BIKINI - Pick up a slingshot bikini and you'll see it's merely three triangular sections and a LOT of string. Nobody should wear this in public unless maybe they are a twin to Pamela Anderson. Wear it in private, or carry it in your purse to use like the weapon it was named for. :)

Whether you choose a bikini that's bare or barely there is up to you. Just make sure you don't forget your sunscreen!

Tips & Warnings
  • Unless you really are Pamela Anderson, every woman reaches a point in her life (I'm past that already) where wearing a bikini in public is not a class act. However, in private, have some fun!
  • Wear sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen!!!

on 4/5/2009 Who better to write a comprehensive assessment of bikini styles than eHow's favorite Aloha author? I read this because I love your work, not because I would ever have the taxing task of choosing a bikini! But, who knows when I'll need this bikini lingo in summertime conversation? ;) Thanks for preparing me for every eventuality!
