Things You'll Need:
- Granny smith or sweet sixteen apples, one for each guest
- Wooden craft sticks, one for each apple
- Individually wrapped caramels, one 14 oz. package for every 5 apples.
- Plain mat ribbon that matches the color of the male wedding party, a foot for each “groom” apple
- Lacy or silky ribbon that matches the color of the female wedding party, a foot for each “bride” apple
- Waxed paper
- Powdered sugar
- Candy sprinkles in colors that complement the wedding
- Optional: Pure chocolate candy bars and shortening (if adding chocolate to your caramel apples)
- Optional: Cake decorating stencils
- Optional: Cellophane bags to cover the finished caramel apples
-
Step 1
Gather, rinse and dry the apples. If you’re going green, get organic apples. Granny Smiths are the classic caramel apple because their crisp tartness tastes great in comparison to the sweet caramel. But if by chance you can find a farmer that supplies the rare Sweet Sixteens, taste one of these and decide if you want them for your wedding favors. They have an incredible tropical or clove, nutmeg like undertone to their flavor. Rinse organic apples in cool water, rinse conventional apples in hot water, or even briefly dip in boiling water to remove excess wax residue.
-
Step 2
Gather the remaining ingredients. You’ll need one 14 ounce package of caramels for every five apples. If using chocolate and going green, you can find fair trade and organic chocolate. You’ll need about 7 ounces of chocolate candy bar for every five apples. If going green and choosing nuts over sprinkles, you can get organic chopped nuts.
-
Step 3
Unwrap caramels and melt. For every 14 oz. package of caramels, add 2 tablespoons of water to the unwrapped candies, and melt in microwave, stopping and stirring every minute.
-
Step 4
Insert sticks into apples and dip into caramel, then set each onto a waxed tray.
-
Step 5
Decorate. If your caramel apples will be covered with sprinkles or nuts, sprinkle them on while the caramel is still warm and tacky. If double dipping in chocolate or drizzling on chocolate, melt chocolate bar pieces with one tablespoon shortening for every 7 ounces of chocolate bar. Refrigerate caramel dipped apples for 15 minutes to harden the caramel, then dip the apples into the chocolate or drizzle chocolate over the apple and set back on trays. You can also use cake stencils to spread “bow-tie” dark chocolate on half of the apples for “grooms’ apples,” and a flower white chocolate design on the other half for “brides’ apples.” Another bride and groom option is to hold a bow-tie and flower stencil close to each caramel coated apple, then prick the design into the apple with a toothpick, and fill in the area with colored sprinkles.
-
Step 6
Wrap and display. If leaving apples out in the open at the wedding, tie the male colored ribbon onto the sticks of half of the apples, and the female colored ribbon onto the other half. If wrapping in clear cellophane, insert apples in the bags first, then tie them at the top with the ribbons.
