You can buy portable gps systems for just a few hundred dollars. The prices seem to be dropping all the time. GPS car tracking is really handy if you are driving in a new area, or you just get lost a lot. Here is how to use portable gps systems to their maximum advantage.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check out where you can install it. Many states have new regulations that don't allow you to have portable gps systems on certain areas of your windshield. This is to allow for maximum visibility while you are driving.

  2. Step 2

Understand that the brand name doesn't matter that much. Magellan, Garmin, & Tom Tom all get their information for portable gps systems from the same satellites. The deciding factor in which one you should buy depends solely on who has the features that you want. More features doesn't necessarily mean better, it can make things so confusing that you'll never actually use it.

  3. Step 3

Run through your drive before your start the engine. Most gps systems come with an option where you can see the step by step details at one glance. Operating gps car tracking while driving can be dangerous. Some of the devices come with a warning that reminds you not to operate it while driving every single time you turn it on. Go through the steps you'll take so your trip doesn't have any surprises. Make sure that the route makes sense.

  4. Step 4

Explore all of the different ways of entering data into gps car tracking. You can even save your favorites for easy access the next time you need driving directions. You can enter data by city, spell it out, or find it on a preset list of hundreds of locations.

  5. Step 5

Make the most of portable gps systems. These units often come equipped with calculators & measurements converters. You might be able to use your device as an mp3 player or even a hands free way to talk on your cell phone if it's blue tooth enabled. If you subscribe to the service certain Garmin units will even read you audio books as you drive.

  6. Step 6

Keep it safe. Portable gps systems can entice thieves. Make sure that you lock it away like you would with a purse. It might even be helpful to rub the tell tale ring that the suction cup makes off of the windshield so people can't guess that a gps might be in the car.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your portable gps system probably comes with a small storage case. Place the system in here when not in use so the screen doesn't get scratched.
