Step 1
Give your cell phone a chance. Before you go out & buy expensive gps system, look at what you already have. Many cellphones now have gps capabilities. At the very least you can visit mapquest & have the driving directions sent to your phone. The only downside to this is that if your phone doesn't have internet capabilities you'll have to do it before you ever leave the house.
-
Step 2
Be prepared to update. Some GPS' offer free updates, but these usually don't include the map updates. One new bridge or street can totally change your commute. Many people recommend only updating your maps every few years. An update can cost up to $100, which is almost as much as new gps car tracking.

Step 3
Make sure that you can charge it. Most of these systems run off of the cigarette lighter in your car. However, they usually also come equipped with several cables so you can change the gps from your wall or even the computer. This is especially handy if the cigarette lighter in your car is already charging your cell phone.

Step 4
Preexisting landmarks are your friend. Most GPS systems come programmed with lots of existing landmarks like restaurants, shopping centers & even gas stations. Your gps might not be able to find the latest restaurant in town . Instead, try entering the direction of some place in the same shopping center so you'll get the general idea of where you need to be.

Step 5
Use common sense. An episode of the show the office centered around someone who could've use GPS lessons. Michael drove his car into a lake because the system didn't give him accurate information.
