Measure the length and width of the room. Make sure you take acccurate measurements. Multiply the length times the width of the room to get the square footage of the room.

Now you need to convert the square footage of the room to square yards because carpet is usually sold by the square yard. Take the total square footage of the area and divide by 9 to get the square yards.

Now you have the total square yards per room. If you want to measure the whole house, measure each room individually adding the measurements for closets or storage rooms to the length. Measure the hall separately. Now add together the total square footage for all rooms and halls. At this point divide by 9 to get the square yards for the whole house.

You do not generally need to account for extra carpet when measuring. You may have carpet left over after the closets and storage rooms have been cut to fit.
