Tips to remedy oily hair

Have you tried to get rid of oily hair without success? Do you wash your hair every day, only to find that by day's end it's hanging from your head in limp, greasy strands? If so, there are a number of things that you can do to remedy oily hair.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Eat a low fat diet to remedy oily hair. While this may not eliminate the problem entirely, it can help cut down on the amount of sebum produced by overactive oil glands in the scalp. Eliminate fried foods and fatty deserts from your diet, and opt for lean poultry and fish, whole grains, and fresh fruits and vegetables instead.

  2. Step 2

Use a shampoo that's formulated especially for oily hair. These shampoos have more detergents and fewer conditioners to more effectively remove the sebum from your scalp and hair.

  3. Step 3

To help remedy oily hair, skip the conditioner. If your scalp already produces enough (or too much) sebum, this natural oil will provide plenty of conditioning for your hair. Adding more conditioner will just make your hair look oily sooner.

  4. Step 4

Wash your hair properly. Many people fail to realize that the oil originates in the scalp, not the hair itself. Therefore, you should wash your scalp thoroughly – wash it twice if necessary. If you have long hair, don't pile it all on your head on the first washing – you want to wash the scalp as directly as possible. To determine when you've washed away most of the oil on your scalp, observe how the shampoo lathers. When you are shampooing a scalp with lots of sebum, you'll see very little shampoo lather. Once you've washed it away completely, the shampoo will foam much more easily.

  5. Step 5

Another important oily hair remedy is to brush and touch your hair as little as possible. Brushing your scalp can stimulate the production of more sebum and distribute it more quickly from the scalp to the ends of your hair. The less you handle your hair, the longer it will take before it appears oily.

  6. Step 6

Use a mild astringent applied directly to the scalp to remedy oily hair. You can try witch hazel, or a weak solution of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar in water. This works best if you apply these as a post-rinse after you've thoroughly washed your hair. Dab the astringent on your scalp with a cotton ball, let it sit for 5 minutes, then gently rinse away with cool water.
