We all want younger, smoother, even, flawless skin. There are many way to attain younger healthier skin and a plethora of products to choose from. But to get a good deep exfoliation you may well be able to do it yourself!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A loofah or for the more daring an abrasive sided sponge
  • Sea salt
  • Sugar
  • Water
  1. Step 1

If you have ever walked a local shopping mall you will know that at concession stands you can find 100 different skin-care products. On tv and in the local drugstore we are bombarded with even more. At the department store we find yet more and increasingly expensive solutions. Then there are spas and cosmeseuticals. But did you know you can achieve spa and even surgical results (similar to dermabrasion and skin resurfacing) in the comfort of your home for next to nothing but cooking ingredients?

The first step is the easiest. Get out a tupperware container or any container handy. In this container add sugar, sea salt and water. You want to form a pasty goop from this so add equal parts upping the sugar just a bit so you have a bit more sugar than salt. Next step is to let it sit over night.

  2. Step 2

Get your loofah ready and if you are really daring get a sponge with an abrasive side (like a scouring side) and get into a hot bath! If you do not have a bath try and stand in a steamy shower for a good ten minutes before starting.

When you have become more or less "pruned" take your goop and use either your loofah or your abrasive side of the sponge and smooth it onto one area at a time. let it sit on each area for about two minutes. After two minutes have passed start inn circular motions to scrub your skin either with the loofah or with the abrasive side of the sponge. Turning red is ok, just do not do go too hard and do not continue if it is painful.

  3. Step 3

Rinse off your body and step out of the shower and put on your favorite soothing moisturizer. The first thing you should have noticed upon stepping out of the bath/shower is that your skin felt noticeably smoother and softer.

The secret is simple! Sugars are what glycolic acid is made from. Though this is technically not glycolic acid the sugar does act as a mild exfoliant. The sea salt is a natural exfoliater and sold under many names as a cosmetic exfoliator, particularly at concession stands at malls. The abrasive nature of the sponge will exfoliate but for many it may be too rough. It does the same as dermabrasion though it is less precise. NO DOCTOR would recommend it but my own dermatologist has conceded that it seems to have worked wonders on my sun-damaged skin! A loofah is a better more gentle, but less profound, option.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to do this once or twice a week. Skin renewal is the key to youthful skin.
  • Never exfoliate sunburned, raw, or injured skin.
  • Do not exfoliate to the point you are sore or it hurts, if you do this you could scar yourself!
