Think strategically about the text for your website

Before you place content or articles on your website, get organized. Take a look at the big picture and then gear your copy to tie in with your company's goals. Learn how to make your website stand out, from your product pages to your company profile.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Figure out what you want to accomplish. Is the copy meant to encourage visitors to take action, get more information, or educate them? Or will the copy simply be to promote your products?

  2. Step 2

Organize your pages well. Create a homepage with links to more information about your company or service.

  3. Step 3

Create a catchy "About Us" page for your website. In a nutshell this will communicate what your company does. It can also include a bit of history, details about your philosophy, corporate culture and mission statement.

  4. Step 4

Write content-rich promotional pages for your website. Don't simply say what you can do and why you're the best. Share information that can help visitors learn more about your products and what value or benefits they can get from them.

  5. Step 5

Educate visitors with your content. Strive to make your website the go-to place for information about your industry, products or services.

  6. Step 6

Develop content for a website by writing an eNewsletter. Post it on your site every month so that visitors can download it. You can also e-mail it out to potential clients or customers.

  7. Step 7

Write very specific text for your link descriptions. This makes your content easy to access by telling consumers exactly what they can find at a link page. Vague text does not get "clicked" on as much.

Tips & Warnings
  • Include photos with product descriptions. Clear, life-like photos help your products to sell themselves. Show many different angles of products as much as you can.
  • Don't steer web surfers away with links to other websites. Add links to other sites only when necessary as an educational tool or part of a step in a process. More resources or links pages are effective when you keep them separate from your products and services.
