When you work at home, you often have to design your own work schedule, so time management can become a challenge. This article provides specific tips for people who want to work at home part time only, rather than working at home full time (40 hours or more per week).

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

If you work at home as a writer creating content for websites like eHow.com, it can be a struggle to limit the amount of hours you spend writing and publishing articles, but there are some little tricks you can use to ensure that you only work a specific number of hours. For instance, you can leave your computer turned on only during those times of the day when you are working, and you can shut it off the rest of the time. If the computer is not turned on, you may be less tempted to write during times when you feel you ought to be doing other things instead.

  2. Step 2

Another strategy that you can use if you are a parent of school age children is to allow yourself to work at home during school hours only. Tell yourself that the time before school and after school is "off limits," and really stick to this rule. Sometimes it helps to implement an arbitrary time management tool like this one if you are determined to maintain a healthy balance between your work life and your home life. (After all, when you work at home, the lines between work and family life can get pretty blurry at times, and anything you can do to make these lines a little less blurry can be helpful.)

  3. Step 3

Another way to ensure that you work at home part time only is to insist on only working a certain number of hours per week. Let's say you only want to work at home for twenty hours each week. "Clock in" at a pre-set time (perhaps 9:00 a.m.) and "clock out" (perhaps 1:00 p.m.) each week day, just as if you were reporting to a twenty hour a week job outside of the home. Try your hardest to stick to whichever hours you set for yourself.

Tips & Warnings
  • Of course, if you are not your own boss, that is, if you work at home but you are accountable to an employer or a client other than yourself, there may be times when you have deadlines that you must meet in order to keep your work at home job. During such times, you may need to exceed your usual work at home part time hours.

on 9/26/2009 Good tips. I always tell my friends that if they don't know how to make money online, find someone that is and copy them. I list a few companies I have found and also have some other articles that may help.
