In some states you can even begin applying for unemployment benefits online, and in contrast some have rules which specify you must do so in person. In a struggling economy many people will find themselves having to start applying for unemployment benefits and it's better not to delay the process so you can get assistance as soon as possible.

1. Any time that you begin applying for unemployment benefits you'll need to look to the state in which you live for guidance and exact definitions of their procedures. The best way to do this properly is to contact the unemployment office and speak to someone about what you should do specifically. Sometimes this can be done through email correspondence or by simply checking the office of unemployment's website.

2. Aside from minor variations in each state, you'll need elementary information like your SS number, employer information, name, address and other related personally descriptive information. You'll either give this information online or write it on a paper application form. You will need to have proof from your employer about your unemployment status which will be used to determine if you qualify.

3. If you're filling out the form online you just need to submit it and wait for a response which could take up to a month, and if you're filling it out on paper you'll need to mail it in or drop it off in person. If you mail it you should send it certified mail to make absolutely sure that they received it. Be patient but vigilant because you want to stay on top of your application status but also realize that in a slow economy there might be a lot of applicants and that will affect turnaround times.

4. Have a contact number of that you can follow up with at the state to check on your status. Write this down in a place where you won't lose it, and when you get a hold of someone let them know when you began applying for unemployment benefits and make sure to have your information nearby because they will use this to look up the progress of your application.
