You will learn the steps in becoming an adoptive or a foster parent.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Call your Local DCS (State Department of Children's Services) Office.

DCS usually gives PATH classes to prospective foster/adoptive parents.
Ask for any information pertaining to becoming an adoptive parent. In addition, request details on an upcoming courses that are mandatory prior to becoming a certified foster parent.

  2. Step 2

Check Listings for Independent Adoption Agencies.

There is a great need for foster/adoptive parents. Thus, many agencies have begun to list in newspapers and web sites. Call and arrange to meet with an agency of your choice. Bring a list of your questions and concerns to the appointment. Discuss in detail the agency's policies and rules.

  3. Step 3

    Talk to other Adoptive Parents.

Get to know people who have been through the experience of adoption.
Adoptive parents can give you great advice and tips about the entire process. Ask teachers, clergy, etc., if they know of a family that has adopted children. Talking about your choices will help you in making the best decision.

  4. Step 4

Get a Head Start by Getting your Home in Order.

Most adoption agencies have minimal requirements for home safety. These lists must be completed prior to a child placement. For example, you may need to buy a fire extinguisher and new batteries for the smoke alarm. Every state has different rules for compliance. Overall, the residence needs to be a hazard-free and clean home.

on 7/16/2009 I've been wanting to adopt after I finish college, and have been discussing it with my daughter a lot lately. It's something I have wanted to do since I was a child, but never knew where to begin. Thanks for posting this! 5*
