Choose a gun safe that is large enough to store your firearms and ammunition. Consider the possibility of future gun purchases when you compare gun safes to make sure the safe you choose will meet your needs further down the line.
Ask yourself which type of lock you would prefer. You can buy a gun safe with various locking mechanisms, depending on your preference. Note that you can expect to pay more for the more secure gun safes.
Consider whether a fireproof and/or waterproof feature is desired. Compare the quality gun safes offered by Remington, Sentry, Winchester, Browning, Liberty; these are all reputable companies.

If you wish to store a handgun, an in-wall safe is an excellent choice. Mount this safe recessed in the wall between 16" wall studs. Hang a picture in front to conceal the gun safe.
You can also store important papers and jewelry when you choose a gun safe like the one pictured. Note this particular wall safe costs between $300 for a model with an electronic lock and $500 for a safe with a fingerprint recognition lock.

Attach this in-floor safe securely to the floor joists by removing a few floorboards. If you're constructing an addition, this in-floor safe can be encased directly in the concrete foundation. You should choose a gun safe like this specifically for handguns and valuables. Conceal by covering with a floor rug.

If you have several guns and or rifles to secure, this standing safe by Sentry is fireproof and features a 3-number combination lock. Door is 1 1/2" solid steel. Cost is just over $1100 (including delivery) to your door.

When you choose a gun safe, look for a safe that has been tested by Underwriter Laboratory (UL) and has earned their certification for a residential security container. Basically this means the higher the rating by the UL, the more difficult it is to break into the safe.
Take your time when you choose a gun safe. Careful selection now can help prevent unforeseen accidents in the future. Be safe!

Tips & Warnings
The more expensive fireproof gun safes will withstand higher temperatures for a longer period of time, but as an extra precaution you can purchase a sleeve for your gun that's made of fire-retardant material. There is a product called Sack-up that sells for between $6 and $8 per sleeve.
Most homeowners insurance policies will insure guns from fire, but not theft. You have to get a rider added to your homeowners policy to cover theft of firearms. Contact your insurance agent for more info.
